Sedalia, Mo.-The 23rd ranked State Fair Community College (SFCC) Lady Roadrunners women's basketball team closed out their portion of the McDonald's Classic with a hard-fought 74-60 victory over Southeast Community College Nebraska inside the Fred E. Davis Multipurpose Center on Saturday night, Nov. 1.
Southeast took an 18-16 lead at the end of the first quarter. The Lady Roadrunners fought back to tie the game at 22 with about seven minutes remaining in the second quarter. The Lady Roadrunners took a 35-31 lead into the locker room at halftime.
At halftime, State Fair Community College honored a pair of Rainbow Six Siege Team National Champions from the spring of 2023 and the spring of 2024. Both teams will be remembered with banners that will hang in the Fred E Davis Multipurpose Center. SFCC Esports head coach Jacob Coleman addressed the crowd following the presentation about the accomplishments of these special teams.
SFCC (2-0) led 50-43 at the end of three quarters. The Lady Roadrunners made the plays in the final quarter including knocking down multiple three-point shots to put the game away.
"There was a lot of ugly basketball," said Lady Roadrunners head coach Nicole Collier. "I would say it was about 20% of the game where we had energy and we were sharp. Great teams have different people step up on different nights. We had that tonight. I thought Taylor Wilson was really good in the post. Carolyn Foster hit some huge three-point shots late in the game that allowed us to breathe. Tonight was a grind. I think some of it is fatigue from playing on the second day. A win is a win; it is easier to learn from a win. Kudos to Southeast, I thought they out worked us for probably 80% of the game. We can never let that happen."
Sophomore forward Ellie Buscher registered a double-double with 16 points and 13 rebounds to lead the team in both categories.Foster contributed 12 points, including a pair of big three-point shots. Wilson also contributed 12 points. Freshman guard Kamaree Pollard added 11 points and a team-high four assists. Sophomore guard Zoe Newland added 10 points to go along with a team-high four steals and two blocked shots. Newland also pulled down 12 rebounds in the contest.
SFCC will return to action on Tuesday, Nov. 4 at North Arkansas College. Tipoff is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
