Women’s Basketball Recap Nov. 21-25

Nov. 21, St. Louis Community College at Sedalia

The Lady Roadrunners lost to the NJCAA Division II seventh-ranked St. Louis Community College Lady Archers 73-61. The game was the Missouri Community College Athletic Conference opener for SFCC.

"We played a little bit better in the last six minutes of the game," said Head Coach Kevin Bucher. "We have to be able to play hard, defend and rebound. We have to be able to hit shots. We missed many layups. I want to give St. Louis credit; they played hard and wanted to win."

Freshman guard Jazzmyn Elston led SFCC in scoring with 20 points. Sophomore guard Maya Brewer contributed 15 points and tied for the team lead in rebounds with eight with sophomore center Grace Morrow. Brewer registered a team-high six steals. Sophomore guard Ren'Cia Rollingdished out a team-high eight assists. SFCC struggled shooting with only 31.8 percent from the field.

Nov. 24, Shawnee Community College at Moberly Area Community College

The Lady Roadrunners opened their portion of the Midwest Bone and Joint Center Classic against the Shawnee Community College Lady Saints from Ullin, Illinois. SFCC shook off a slow start to defeat Shawnee 73-51.

At halftime, SFCC led Shawnee 31-25. The Lady Roadrunners outscored Shawnee 23-13 in the third quarter to put the game away.

"We started to do a better job of passing the ball and got better shots," said Bucher. "We were relying too much on the outside shot. We also went to a different zone defense, and that was really the difference in changing the momentum of the game. My biggest concern was the amount of turnovers that we had."

Elston and sophomore guard/forward Catie Kaifes led the Lady Roadrunners in scoring with 19 points each. Kaifes also pulled down 12 rebounds for a double-double. She tied with Rolling and Elston for the team lead in steals with three. Rolling dished out a team-high 11 assists.

Nov. 25, Wabash Valley College at Moberly Area Community College

The Lady Roadrunners closed their portion of the Midwest Bone and Joint Center Classic with a loss, 81-74, to the 14th ranked Wabash Valley College Lady Warriors from Mount Carmel, Illinois.

SFCC led 21-19 at the end of the first quarter and built a 37-24 lead in the second quarter, the largest held by either team.

"We were able to attack the basket in order to get to the free-throw line," said Assistant Coach Jade Perry.

The Lady Warriors went to a full-court trapping pressure to trim SFCC's lead to just two points at halftime. Wabash forced 25 SFCC turnovers and made the plays to win the game.

Brewer led a trio of Lady Roadrunners in double figures scoring with 28 points. She tied for the team lead in steals with Rolling with three. Elston contributed 14 points. Kaifes added 13 points and 12 rebounds to finish her second double-double for the classic.

The Lady Roadrunners travel to Harrison, Arkansas, for a 5:30 p.m. game Nov. 28 against the North Arkansas College Lady Pioneers. The Lady Roadrunners record currently stands at 6-4, 0-2 in the Missouri Community College Athletic Conference.

"We are in a series of games where we will play tough teams from here on," said Perry. "We are going to need everyone to be prepared mentally and physically to play."
