Lady Roadrunners snap three-game losing streak
Shawnee, Kan.-The State Fair Community College (SFCC) Lady Roadrunners softball team won a pair of games in the Midwest College Classic on Saturday, Feb. 28 in Shawnee, Kan.
Shawnee, Kan.-The State Fair Community College (SFCC) Lady Roadrunners softball team won a pair of games in the Midwest College Classic on Saturday, Feb. 28 in Shawnee, Kan.
In their first game of the day, SFCC defeated Southwestern Community College 9-7. The Lady Roadrunners defeated Morton College 9-0 in five innings because of the run rule.
In game one, the SFCC offense put together 14 hits. Sophomore utility player Jenna Herald of Monett had three hits, including a double. Herald also scored twice. Freshman pitcher/second baseman Grace Evans of Fulton also had three hits, a run scored, and an RBI. Freshman outfielder/utility player Jillian Reller of Elsberry had a pair of hits and a run scored. Freshman outfielder Madelyn Backes of Bonnots Mill contributed a pair of hits, two RBIs, and a run scored. Sophomore first baseman/outfielder Courtney Dehn of Dearborn and sophomore catcher Katlyn Starke of Linn had a double each. Sophomore pitcher/utility player Valerie Meyer of Houstonia hit a home run and drove in a pair of runs.
Meyer got the start in the circle for SFCC. Meyer pitched six innings, gave up seven runs on 10 hits, struck out three, and walked one. Freshman pitcher Corinne Tuck of Braymer pitched one inning and gave up one hit.
Freshman pitcher Addison Wallace of Carthage was the story of game two for SFCC. Wallace tossed a no-hitter for SFCC. Wallace gave up no runs in five innings, struck out five, and walked one.
SFCC (3-5) provided plenty of offensive support. Freshman utility player Shyanne Weibrecht of Perryville had a pair of hits and scored three runs. Backes also had a pair of hits, two runs scored, and three RBIs. Freshman third baseman Morgan Marshall of St. Joseph added a pair of doubles, two run scored, and two RBIs. Dehn also had a pair of hits including a triple and four RBIs. As a team, SFCC put together nine runs on 10 hits in the game.
"We talked to our kids about battling every game and working hard until the game was over," said Lady Roadrunners head coach Michele Rupard. It was good to see us go back and forth scoring runs against Southwestern Community College, a team that has beaten us previously. In the second game, we hit a lot of balls hard again today and played well defensively."
