Kaalberg named Lady Roadrunners Softball Head Coach

For just the third time in the history of the program, there will be a new person in charge of the softball program at State Fair Community College. Kevin Kaalberg brings more than 20 years of experience in teaching and coaching the game of softball at the collegiate, travel ball, and high school levels.

"It is important to me to be at an institution that is involved with the community, and the community is involved with the school," said Kaalberg. "When I got here and met people, I thought that this place was more like a family. The new facility had a huge impact. The facilities here are top-tier. When you want to build a program that competes for championships, you have to have facilities. The academic piece is very important to me. Every team I've coached has been an Academic All-American team. Academics are the reason you are in college. Athletics is another piece of it but, the reason that you are there is academics."

Kaalberg comes to SFCC after serving as the head coach at Southeastern Community College in West Burlington, Iowa beginning in July 2022 to July 2026. He built and managed an increasingly competitive NJCAA Division I program in Region 11. He recruited quality student-athletes by traveling to recruiting events to identify prospective student-athletes, while planning and managing student -athlete campus visits. He created and implemented practice plans, coordinated travel, and managed assistant coaching staff while working directly with athletic support staff. Kaalberg prepared game scouting reports and game strategy for opponents. He was fully responsible for training, development, technique, and academic excellence. He set up volunteer opportunities to foster community outreach. Kaalberg also created fundraising opportunities to support the softball athletic budget. He advised student-athletes regarding a two-year plan and beyond. He counseled and supported the academic success of the student-athletes.

Kaalberg served as the head softball coach/academic advisor at McCook Community College in McCook Neb. from December 2019 to July 2022. He built and managed an increasingly competitive NJCAA Division I softball program. Kaalberg. He recruited quality student-athletes by traveling to recruiting events to identify prospective student-athletes, while planning and managing student -athlete campus visits. He created and implemented practice plans, coordinated travel, and managed assistant coaching staff while working directly with athletic support staff. Kaalberg prepared game scouting reports and game strategy for opponents. He was fully responsible for training, development, technique, and academic excellence. Kaalberg served as a senior financial analyst for the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics from September 2016 to December 2019 where he executed profitability analysis by service line to help improve the bottom line. He also provided general accounting oversight including preparation of monthly and annual financial statements and physician productivity reports.

Kaalberg served as a finance manager for the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics from February 2013 to September 2016 where he managed a 166 million dollar annual hospital budget for 20 departments. He began his career at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in September 2008 as a health systems administrator.

"We are very excited to welcome Coach Kaalberg as our next softball coach," said Athletic Director Michele Rupard. "In my time on the softball staff, I was able to coach against Kevin and see how his teams competed and how he treated his student-athletes. We look forward to watching him continue to build and uphold the culture that's here and really take the program to new heights on the new field. He's a relentless worker and we are grateful for the addition he will be to our athletic department and the State Fair Community College family as a whole. He and his wife Andrea have been great to get to know, and we can't wait to see what the future holds for State Fair softball." 

Kaalberg holds an Associate's Degree from Kirkwood Community College in Accounting. He holds a Bachelor's Degree from Mount Mercy University in Finance and a Master's Degree in Public Administration from Upper Iowa University.
